Manchester Architects Material Studio Architects (MSA) were commissioned to remodel an existing 1960s semi-detached property to provide a 4 bed family home. Two extensions aim to break the flat fronted mass of the existing building and add depth to the facade.
A simple pitched roof gable end extension to the garage follows the line of the main house, whilst stepping down from the existing ridge line, making this subservient to the original building. The other extension brings the garage forward from existing building line. This shift allows for a new covered entrance canopy, taking formal reference from neighbouring houses.
MSA designed the rear extensions to work in two ways. The first move is to bring the building line out at ground floor level to create a 1.5 metre deep extension allowing the kitchen to become more generous with a view onto the garden. This will also aid in creating a new wet room to the rear of the garage, along with a utility and boot room. The second move, is the introduction of a six metre deep extension which will form the new living area off the open plan kitchen/dining room.
The extension has a varied ridge line. This has been designed to respect the scale, rights of light and outlook of the neighbouring property. The eaves line of the extension looking to site is no higher than 2.1 metres, equal to the typical garden fence height. The roof line then rakes back 45 degrees up to eaves level. Due to the position of the extensions, there is no overlooking to neighbouring properties as all views from the new additions are focused onto the patio area and garden beyond.
