THE JOINER’S HOUSE

This project offered a rare opportunity for Material Studio Architects. The client, who is both a successful joiner and the main contractor, has an exceptional ability to interpret and deliver our design. Their mutual obsession with attention to detail should prove instrumental in transforming this property into a unique family home.

The client appointed us as local Manchester architects, to extend the property both to the rear and the side. The brief was to provide flexible living accommodation with an enhanced connection to the garden, in addition to an integrated in-house workshop to help ply his trade.

The building line is pushed out at ground floor level to the side and rear, to create an enlarged open plan kitchen, dining, living area. Functional spaces are tucked away, with a new wet-room, utility and boot room located in the old kitchen location with access via the side of the property. A joinery workshop is added to the rear, providing a dedicated space for the client to focus on his craft.

The sleek, dynamic pitched roof design plays on the existing form of the house, creating simple elegant spaces within, whilst the layout maximises the connection to outside. High quality timber cladding contrasts with the main house whilst referencing the client’s trade.

This is the second of three collaborative projects produced in partnership with interior designer Martin Dourish.
