CHORLTONVILLE: THE SMALL ROOM

The Small Room is another project completed by Howe Developments who have brought our latest project to life in the heart of Chorltonville.

This extension reinterprets the traditional pitched form through a trio of articulated gables, creating a dynamic yet harmonious silhouette. Vertical zinc cladding in a muted sage tone brings subtle tactility, while carefully proportioned openings frame light, landscape and interior life. The result is a restrained yet expressive addition that is only 2 meters in depth that still elevates the everyday.

This interior balances clean architectural lines with a warm, tactile material palette. Framed in black steel glazing, the space unfolds through layered sightlines that create depth and intimacy while maintaining a strong visual connection to the garden beyond.

Internally, soft sage walls and natural oak flooring establish a calm space, complemented by bespoke joinery and subtle mid-century influences. The timber dining furniture introduces sculptural simplicity, while textured upholstery and woven finishes soften the overall room.

Natural daylight is central to the design. Rooflights and full height glazing invite shifting patterns of light throughout the day, animating surfaces and enhancing the warmth of the wood tones. The result is a home that feels both refined and relaxed contemporary in structure, yet grounded in material authenticity.

Every element has been considered for balance: contrast against warmth, shadow against light, form against texture. The space is minimal without feeling stark, curated without feeling staged.
