This residential concept originally designed by Union Architecture was passed onto Manchester Architects Material Studio Architects (MSA) by Chrome to reconfigure the proposed layouts and address the critical details of the design.
The development is located in Childwall just outside Liverpool city centre, and consists of six 2 bed duplex apartments and eighteen 2 bed apartments. The site is situated on a wide suburban road characterised by trees, grass verges and open space, with a layout that is narrow to the street but deep in plan.
These constraints have led to a linear block set back from the main road that ensures a minimal presence to the street scene and against the neighbouring buildings. This set back also allows for a large frontal garden and with an inner courtyard to the secondary entrance and private terraces incorporated into the scheme. The development manages to create green open spaces as characterised in the surrounding context despite the site’s limitations.
The proposed materials take precedence from the natural palette of the area which is primarily brickwork with elements of sandstone and timber. With elegant execution in the design detail, MSA along side Union Architecture have created a scheme that responds to the aspirations of modern living whilst respecting the surrounding traditional built environment.
