This project is a private residence located on the top floor of Whitworth Street House. This former warehouse had previously been transformed into 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments creating high density living for Manchester’s ever growing market. As time has passed the previous smaller roof extension and terrace has fallen into disrepair.
The decking has suffered decaying and as a result was beginning to break in multiple areas. The deck substructure has reached the end of its life span because of the constant rain causing dampness. The original lead extension has suffered from weather damage and is leaking into the heart of the apartment.
The extension will provide a redecorated chill out room to replace the existing, along with an alternative dining area, steam room and a sauna room with views to the Palace Theatre. There will also be a smaller landscaped terrace outside keeping the views to Canal Street.
Manchester Architects Material Studio Architects (MSA) has developed the scheme so the appearance of the proposed extension complements the existing building showing the continuity of an ever growing modern city.
